And I had the Cordon Bleu Skillet - ham, chicken, swiss, and Hollandaise sauce on a bed of ranch potatoes and cheese, with two eggs (I went with 'over easy') nestled on top.
There's a place right off the square in McKinney that we enjoy going to occasionally called Poppy's Garden Cafe. Poppy's is a pretty place with a large patio outside, terraced areas with walkways and fountains and an inside bar and dining room that's comfortable and cozy. They have live music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays outside and I'm sure it makes for a lovely evening.

The times we've visited, it's been too warm for us to eat outside so we've gone inside. The decor is casual - dark wood walls, crisp blue tablecloths and bright red poppys covering the booths.

The menu is pretty varied too. Last time we were there, it was at lunchtime. I ordered the Brie BLT - applewood smoked bacon, avocado, tomatoes, sprouts, black pepper mayo on toasted bread, served with fries and a pickle slice. It was good - toasted just right with the cheese warmed through, plenty of bacon, tomatoes and avocados and a smear of mayo.

At lunch, you can pick from salads, appetizers (like Tempura Fried Green Beans), sandwiches and entrées. The dinner menu is a little more extensive with more entrée choices - ribeye, tuna, salmon, crab cakes, chicken dishes, pastas and more. The also have a full bar and several Happy Hour specials.

Going to Poppy's would make for a fun day or a great evening out. You can find it tucked away on the north west side of the downtown square. Plus, you can take a stroll around town afterwards!

Another new place! Well, sort of....Kel's Kitchen has been around for quite a while and we've been to their location on Forest Lane by the Toll Road a few times. But now, a Kel's has opened in our neck of the woods.

Located on Coit just south of Arapaho in Richardson, they've moved into a spot that has been a couple of other restaurants. Hopefully, Kel's will have great success here and be around for a long time.

We've eaten there twice now -once for breakfast and once for dinner- and have been happy both times. We stopped in for breakfast last Saturday morning. There was a nice crowd but the place wasn't packed. Service was good and very prompt.

I ordered the Kel's Combo - two eggs, ham, bacon, sausage and half a waffle - all for $6.45. RJ chose the Breakfast Feast - also $6.45 - which came with three pancakes, two eggs and choice of bacon, sausage links or patties. Both breakfasts were delicious and filling.

On our dinner visit, the daily special was chicken & dumplings - a favorite for both of us, so we decided upon that as our entrée. It was served with a choice of three sides. We got six different items so we could taste several. We were also brought a basket of rolls and cornbread. Despite all that, we still ordered dessert- homemade pies. I picked coconut meringue and RJ had chocolate. Both tasted homemade and heavenly. Again, everything we got was A+. The service was a little slower at dinner time. But the owner took care of us personally and we has a great time.

Now, don't go to Kel's expecting anything fancy. But if you'd like good meals at reasonable prices, you'll be glad you stopped in.

Most of the staff has been there for years. They'll remember you on your next visit too! There were six of us on this last trip. We got a variety of items but the most popular item at the table was chicken fried steak. That came with two vegetables and plenty of rolls. it IS one of the things the Old Mill is noted for and it was good - a nice size steak with a fried-just-right crust. I added greens and mashed potatoes- both were scrumptious. Our son, being ever so health conscious, decided to have the Cobb Salad. I've gotten it before and knew it was also a great choice- lots of finely chopped ingredients- ham, eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, bacon, cheese and other goodies served with a vinaigrette dressing.

We were all pretty full after our meals but our waiter bent our arms and got us to order dessert. They make a mean coconut cream pie and chocolate cream pie. Two of us got those and one got our waiter's choice- peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream.

The Old Mill Inn also hosts a mystery dinner theater on Friday and Saturday evenings. You'll need to call and make reservations and we're told they often sell out. Sounds like a fun time.

Picasso's is a little gem of a find. RJ heard about it when it was at another location, close to his office. he never went but always got good reports from co-workers. When we realized they had relocated at Skillman and Walnut Hill in a newly remodeled shopping center, we thought we'd try.

We've been twice now and we've enjoyed it. We each got their small pizza (person size) both visits along with a small salad. The first time I got the gorgonzola and pear salad - butter lettuce, fresh pear, gorgonzola and pecans with vidalia onion dressing. I confess I have a love of blue cheese and gorgonzola and loved it. However, I am making an attempt to venture out more and not get the same things over and over (even though I know they are good & safe ) I selected a 'starter' Caesar but which also good. They do offer several other interesting selections ~ Warm Tomato Mozzarella Salad, Neapolitan Pizza Salad, Grapes & Goat Cheese Salad, Cobb, etc.

Then pick your sauce and they have a bevy of them- Classic Red Sauce, Alfredo Sauce, Pesto Sauce, Garlic Butter and Basil Sauce, Spicy Taco Pizza Sauce, Barbecue Pizza Sauce, Thai Peanut Sauce, Ricotta Cheese, Chicago Style Pizza Sauce, Refried Beans. Toppings are just as plentiful. Being a newbie on the first trip, I decided upon something simple... butter crust with red sauce, green olives and sausage. Mine was good but the second time we went, I went with the thin crust which I did prefer to the thicker butter version.

And on that pizza, I chose Picasso's Super Cheese- Mozzarella, Provolone, Monterrey jack, Parmesan and Romano cheeses, with red sauce. I kind of like the 'plain' pizzas. I enjoy the fancier ones like BBQ chicken, white pizza and so forth once in awhile but give me a cheese or pepperoni any day.

RJ & I both concurred that the atmosphere was pleasant at Picasso's and the service was good. They do offer lots of other things such as pasta, grilled entrées, fish selection, burgers, sandwiches, quesadillas and more. We'll be going back!

Fall is right around the corner and you can almost smell the scent of corny dogs in the air! The State Fair of Texas is less than 3 weeks away and as always, will be offering a bevy of things to do, see and eat to delight most anyone. There's music on several stages all day and night, the midway with plenty of rides and games, exhibit buildings for shopping, exhibit buildings for looking & learning, and of course, all the food, where as you know, they are now frying anything that you can stick in your mouth

Here's a little history ~ The first State Fair to be held in Dallas was presented at the current location in 1886. Fair Park was the site of the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition which ran for six months and attracted 6 million people. An extended 31-day Fair in 1986 celebrated the Texas Sesquicentennial and drew almost 4 million visitors.

Into college football? It doesn't get any better than this. The Cotton Bowl has just undergone a 50 million dollar major renovation. It's seating capacity has been upped to 91,000!
