Tillman's Roadhouse in the Bishop Arts District





Tillman's Corner opened in the eclectic Bishop Arts District 14 years ago when the area was up-and-coming. Along the way, the name changed to Tillman's Roadhouse and the place got a makeover to its current  fresh and open look.

RJ and I have been wanting to try Tillman's for quite a while and this weekend, it was perfect timing. We got going a little later than usual - too late for catching breakfast  - and Tillman's came to mind.

After the trek over, we parked and went in. We've never been so we didn't know what it would look like inside but I think we both expected the general feel of a barbecue or steak joint- lots of wood furniture, wood plank floors and maybe old Coca Cola and gas station signs on the walls for decors . Not so! The place has a combination rustic but elegant atmosphere - comfy seats, pretty pillows& crystal chandeliers combined with wood walls, carved wooden animal heads, and lanterns.

We were seated and our waiter came immediately to take our drink order. He informed us that the drink of the day was freshly made mint lemonade and that sounded good to both of us. I don't think we've ever had anything quite so refreshing and it was a nice alternative to our usual iced tea.
 


He also let us know that the special was grilled cheese & soup - made with two kinds of cheese piled onto homemade jalapeno bread, served with a bowl of creamy poblano soup. That was all I needed to hear - sounded like a winner.

The sandwich was large, buttery and grilled perfectly with the cheeses slightly oozing down the sides. I am not a big soup lover but must say that this was amongst the best soup I've ever had. Seasoned just right, it had a lovely creamy texture, a nice bit of heat to it and was garnished with a drizzle of sour cream.
 

RJ decided on the Smoked Beef Brisket Quesadilla, filled with the smoky beef and  oaxacan & chihuahua cheeses and garnished with pepitas, lime creme fraiche and pico de gallo.

We also got an appetizer, one I had read that's a 'must' at Tillman's - their very popular Trio of Fries. I understand now. I truly get it. The waiter brought us a wooden crate filled with the trio - parmesan black pepper kennebec fries, chile dusted purple peruvian fries and smoked salt dusted sweet potato fries served with house made catsup and horseradish pickle mayo. 

If you get by Tillman's and only have one thing, make it the Trio. I loved these. All three were excellent but my fav was the sweet potato with the smokiness from the salt. The homemade catsup was a delight too- not sure was was in it but it tasted like it had a hint of cinnamon or ginger.

Our waiter stayed on top of everything and was A+. He was delighted to hear we were 'first timers' and had made our way over from Garland. He showed us the dinner menu, which included a couple of steaks that I bet are to die for.

I can't wait until our next venture over and am already contemplating what to get. Of course, whatever it is, we WILL be adding those fries!
