Hunky's in the Bishop Arts District, Oak Cliff

Saturday morning, once again, we had to combine business with pleasure. RJ had to take care of a few things for work and knew he'd end up in the Oak Cliff area. We have been to the Bishop Arts District before and had seen LOTS of neat little shops and restaurants there. This would be the perfect chance to explore and try one.

Saturday was a foggy, cold and damp day, especially in the morning - not a great one for strolling around and window shopping - so we just parked close to a few of the restaurants we thought we might like. First attempt was at a tiny Mexican place that served breakfast, lunch and dinner. We opened the door to go in and it was packed. We turned and left, leaving it for an other day.

Next stop was Tillman's Roadhouse, one of main 'fixtures' in the Bishop Arts District. We walked in at straight up eleven o'clock and although the posted hours are 11-3 on Saturdays, they weren't open yet. Strike two.

On to Hunky's Hamburgers. Hooray!!!- it was open and they were waiting for us with open arms....well, not literally, but the friendly staff was ready to take our order. This was a first for us at Hunky's....they have two locations, this one and one on Cedar Springs that's been there for years, but somehow Hunky's has always evaded us.

They have many burger variations- hamburger, cheeseburger, double cheeseburger, mushroom burger, hickory burger....well, you get the picture. Plus they offer healthier versions if you are so inclined- veggie burgers, turkey burgers, salads, etc.  But, why get all carried away with the "fancy" stuff....we stuck to the basics.
RJ went with the double double (double meat, double cheese) and fries. I got the chili cheeseburger and onion rings and to our delight, saw that they served cherry and vanilla cokes. Two cherry cokes, please.

The burgers were great. The hamburger patties had a real 'grilled' taste and all ingredients were fresh. RJ approved mightily of the fries and I thought the onion rings were wonderful. With almost a tempura type batter, they were crispy, hot and the onions themselves were fully cooked. They were miles above the last order of onion rings I had elsewhere and I will definitely get them again next visit.

Plus the cherry cokes were the perfect accompaniment!

Prices were reasonable and the staff checked on us regularly to see how we were doing.

The decor at Hunky's is reminiscent of an old soda fountain- lots of white walls, tile and old tin tile ceilings. We were told that the building dated back to the 20's and had housed several businesses in its lifetime. We're glad it's Hunky's now and I can't wait for our next trip over to it!

Hunky's is located at 321 N. Bishop Ave., Dallas, Tx. 75208
