Vlado Pizza, Garland

UPDATE 7-3-2009 Sadly, Vlado's Pizza has closed. A shame - it was consistently good.

Last Thursday we had a dilemma. The Cowboys/Packers game was only hours away and what were we going to do for game time food? Just a normal dinner wouldn't work. This had to be junk food or "pickies" as Rachael Ray calls them.

I scoured through coupons and spotted one from Pizza Hut for a combo pizza and wings. I don't think we have ever ordered from Pizza Hut - we usually order from several of the mom & pop places around us-  but this sounded good. Ok, that decision was made. Whew. Now, I have to figure what time to call it in.  This had to be coordinated precisely. RJ gets home around 6:30 and game time was 7:00. We would need to work quickly.  I could place the order between 6 and 6:15, that would allow 30 minutes for them to have it ready, I would drive over pick it up and could be back home a few minutes before 7. Great!

Everything was falling into place. It was 6 straight up.  I dialed. The ringing began. The ringing continued.... and continued. Oh, my gosh, how many people could possibly be ordering pizza at the same time....well, obviously a lot. I stayed on the line for 7 or 8 minutes and finally just gave up. I was disheartened.

By now, RJ was home. He left work early - did I mention this was a BIG game?

Now, we do have a DVR - pausing the start of the game would be easy enough but, hey, this was a HUGE game.... it needed to be viewed in its purest form - live.

Light bulbs went off- grabbed the coupons and menus we have from every place close by. We both remembered a new pizza joint that opened about a month ago right up the street called Vlado's. Unchartered waters but now we were in a time crunch. I called their number- hey, they answered right away! I told them what we wanted - their large Supreme pizza (they called it the Mix Max). It would be ready in 10-15 minutes. We could still make it.

We got everything prepped here at the house - plates, napkins, drinks ready and the TV on. Hopped in the car and headed out. RJ went in - and promptly came right back out. They had messed our order up - not quite sure how but that's beside the point - it would be another 10 minutes but they would let us have it for $5.95. All right, we had no choice but to wait.

It came in less than 10 minutes, we drove back home and there was still pre-game hooplah on..... Bryant Gumbel blathering on and Cris Collinsworth (who RJ has dubbed the Martha Stewart of football- he is on every NFL show on every channels and knows everything ).

We sat down, opened the pizza box, dug in and it was heaven. Garlicky, yeasty, fresh crust, lost of toppings and LOTS of cheese.  Vlado's Mix Max had all the usual suspects of a Supreme pizza- pepperoni, sausage, bell peppers, mushrooms, olives, and more.

You can dine in at Vlado's - they have a few tables and a pool table! They offer the regular array of pizza menu items specialty pizzas, thick or thin crusts, salads, stombolis, wings and subs. We were pleasantly surprised and will definitely be ordering from them again.

Vlado Pizza, located at 6850 N. Shiloh Road, Suite F3, Garland (that's in the same shopping center with Kroger). 972-495-2266.

I agree, if i ever am remotely in the area i make a special trip to Vlado's. The pizza there is probably the best i've had in DFW. Stromboli's are exceptional. the crust is simply the best, like a biscuit texture. I would recommend this over any pizza place in the area. Best of all it's the shortest wait to get your food. even if they mess up your order an hour before superbowl time you're probably going to get it b4 the game starts.
