Del's Charcoal Burgers in Richardson
Del's Charcoal Burgers is the kind of place you may have passed by a hundred times but never noticed. It sits on a side street in downtown Richardson - a small brick building at the corner of Mckinney and Polk Street.
Don't let that tiny building fool you. Inside, Del's offers charm, nostalgia and great burgers with that wonderful backyard burger taste.
I think that Del's has been around for quite some time but the current owners, "Hoss" and his wife, Mary, took over about four years ago. They left it pretty much as it was. They knew they had a real gem- why mess with that! You order at the counter and take your seat with mouth watering for what is to come.
We've been several times- we always have to catch it on a Saturday because they have short hours and it's not convenient at lunchtime for either RJ or myself. Last time we were there, it was packed with every table full. We were so glad to see that the neighborhood appreciates a good thing.
I always get the Texas Burger and RJ chooses the double cheeseburger, all the way. Both come with fries and a drink. My Texas Burger is a thick patty, charcoal grilled, with lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, cheese and hickory sauce. Oh my! And RJ's double cheeseburger is so big, he usually has to cut it in half to eat it. The fries are always good - nothing fancy - but good. They offer root beer in frosted mugs and I have read they they serve their own homemade root beer. Not sure if this is true but on our next visit, I'll sure find out.
Hoss, Mary, and the rest of the staff are so friendly and know how to keep you coming back. Open 11-3 Monday thru Sat but they recently began staying open Thursday, Friday & Sat nights from 5:30 to 9.
