Cliffside Cafe at the Belmont Hotel, Dallas
This a very cool place. The name kept popping up in article after article in the newspaper and we wanted to see what the buzz was about.
We knew the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff had been completely renovated and offered an incredible view of downtown Dallas. They have a small bar (BarBelmont) with a large open air patio that overlooks it- now THIS is a place to go any nice night for a great time. Breathtaking sunsets with the sunlight shimmering on the skyline!
But what was all the fuss about the recently opened Cliffside Cafe? We heard they had new young chefs and an "eclectic menu". I found their web site and menus online- they sounded good enough. Wondered if they would pass the test. Well, YES!
We've been twice now. The first time was a Saturday and they had been open about two weeks. The place was packed with a varied crowd. We were seated right away- I think we got the last available table because the area by the door began to fill and a line formed.
Our waiter was great and attentive. He explained the menu, told us his suggestions and favorites and informed us that the crowds had been there every day since they opened.
RJ chose the Belmont Breakfast- two eggs, vanilla bean pancakes, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, and toast or a biscuit for $11. His eggs were perfectly cooked to order (he likes 'over easy' and not everybody seems to understand the concept, but Cliffside did).

I went for the Grilled Cheese Sandwich which I've now had twice. I have begun to crave this concoction. Gruyere cheese, sundried tomatoes, and fresh basil stuffed between slices of sourdough bread, and grilled to a buttery golden, served with coleslaw and french fries. I am starting to salivate as I write- this is one delicious sandwich.
I keep telling myself that I'll try something new next time....yeah, right. But EVERYTHING sounds wonderful. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We were told that Friday nights for dinner are pretty crowded but you can make a reservation.
Cliffside Cafe is casual and has a retro decor. Very hip atmosphere. When we've been, most everyone was wearing jeans or shorts and t's. Don't know how it is at dinner but I am guessing you don't need to get really dressed up.
We walked over to the hotel to take a peek after our meal and it's beautiful. The lobby is small but cozy. This would be a good choice for a romantic or weekend getaway especially if you couldn't travel too far.
