A Note of Introduction

Hi, everyone!

My husband, RJ, and I are 50 somethings from Garland who love to take road trips on the weekends and explore around North Texas. My goal here is to offer you all a sampling and reviews of the places we visit.

We never knew there were so many back roads, neat little hidden areas, great restaurants & stores and all sorts of scenery until we began our excursions about a year or so ago. We've seen all KINDS of things....who knew people kept camels in the front yards in North Texas!

Ok, so, with all that said, here's our last weekend follies....

We started out Friday night going to the State Fair... you just have to go to the fair We did the usual things ... ate.... corny dogs, turkey legs, funnel cakes, chocolate covered bananas, ice cold root beers and we tried something new this year - Fried Guacamole Bites. These were actually very tasty- guacamole mixed with salsa & cheese rolled into balls and then battered with a heavy batter reminiscent of fried chicken batter. Fried until golden brown and served with your choice of dipping sauce. We had a devil of a time finding a booth that offered them. The one we went to was hidden way at the back, sort of by the bungee rides.

We didn't sample the Deep Fried Latte or the Fried Coke but they seem to be a huge favorite!

Went to all the exhibits and walked around until we couldn't walk any more. A fun time.

Saturday was a new day. We love to go to breakfast on the weekends...absolutely LOVE it. We hadn't been to Mimi's in Allen in a while. If you wait until 10 or after, you have to fight the crowds so we tried to get an early start. No waiting when we got there - yeah!

I adore their muffins- the Honey Oat Bran is always my first choice and wouldn't you know it, they had just run out Ok, I gave in and tried their seasonal Pumpkin muffin. Am glad I did- it was delicious. Nice and spicy.

Hubby had their bacon, egg, potatoes & pancakes. I got the Tuscan Omelette - stuffed with artichoke hearts, tomatoes and spinach & artichoke dip. Extremely fine!

From Mimi's, we headed up towards McKinney. We wanted to check out a restaurant in downtown McKinney called Spoons Cafe. A friend of hubby's runs it and we knew they had just relocated. We wanted to see where they were now and how they seemed to be doing. It's on a southwest corner of the square and appeared to be packed. We didn't go in but you could see the crowds thru windows and all the folks sitting outside on their patio. So glad they are doing well and we'll have to go soon. You can check them online at spoonscafe.com.

Downtown McKinney has so many neat little restaurants and shops. We discovered Poppy's recently- what a treat! Talk about a fabulous outdoor dining area. Very different and beautifully presented cuisine. We've also been to Mama Emilia's and La Misha. I'll write about those another time but they are certainly worth a visit!

All right, we left McKinney and took several windy back roads heading southeast. I just love seeing all the rural areas and neat houses tucked back in the middle of nowhere. We've had the most bizarre weather this year and everything is still so green. There are a few signs of fall but they're mostly all the pumpkins and scarecrows everyone is sticking around their yards and stores.

The Lucas Volunteer Fire Department was have an open house & festival with stick pony races. We passed by it and saw all sorts of activity ... lots of kids!

From there, on to the house.

Sunday was another day for exploring. Richard had clipped a coupon from the paper for a Mexican restaurant in Wylie called Miquela's. They're open for breakfast on the weekends so it already sounded good to us!

The address lists "4014 Oak Road" in Wylie. Seems that there are two Oak Roads or two sections of Oak Road in Wylie. It's actually right off Hwy 78 outside and east of Wylie. The building looks industrial at a glance- whitish metal with some red trim. We got there at 10:30am and there were no cars in the parking lot other than a couple we assumed were the staff. We were a bit hesitant but decided we won't know if we like it if we don't try it

Inside, we were pleasantly surprised... much nicer than the outside appearance. They've got a variety of the standard Mexican fare and seemed to have quite a few seafood dishes including Ceviche. They have several they are adding in beginning this week. Their Eggplant with Shrimp looked and sounded intriguing.

Back to breakfast, RJ got the Huevos Rancheros and I got Migas. Both were really tasty ... plenty of everything and cooked fresh to order. Great flour tortillas. Good coffee and they kept it coming. Excellent service - our waitress, Debbie, was friendly and on top of everything. We'll definitely go back for dinner and soon.

Be sure to look for their coupons in the Dallas Morning News.

From Miquela's, it was on to a drive thru Firewheel - we always like to check and see what's new there because there is always something popping up. We did notice one that looks interesting coming soon- Coppies. Their signs on the front say everything is made from scratch. The location is on the strip along Hwy 78 where Chipotle and Potbelly's are. Can't wait to try it and be assured, I'll tell you all about it.

Back home after that. It was already after 12 and it WAS Cowboy Sunday....we DO have our priorities. Ok, ok, the Cowboys lost but we're doing much better now that a couple of days have passed. Next Sunday is a whole new day & game.

Not sure where the road will take us next weekend. We've read about all sorts of cool sounding places and things to try- have them on our list. Most are in the North Texas area but we're not opposed to traveling a little further. Always an adventure!

Until then, happy trails.
